Christmas in S. Korea: A Culinary Experience

다른 문화의 음식에 파묻히는 것은 세상의 또 다른 구석을 알게 되는 감각적으로 가장 즐거운 방법이다. 이번에 한국(남한)을 방문한 것도 마찬가지이다. 수많은 믿기지 않는 경험들 중에서도 가장 기억에 남는 것은 움직이는 쭈꾸미를 먹는 것이었다. 촉수가 접시에 자꾸 붙는 바람에 젓가락으로 이 꾸물거리는 괴물을 집어올리는 것은 레스링 한 판과 같았다. 인륜적이지 않게 들릴지도 모르겠지만, 이 생명체는 접시에 올려지기 전에 죽었다는 것을 강조하고 싶다. 그저 매우 매우 매우 싱싱했을뿐!

Culinary immersion in another culture is one of the most sensory satisfying way of getting to know a new corner of the world. It was no different when visiting S. Korea. Among the many incredible experiences, one of the most memorable was eating a still moving, baby octopus. Tentacles sticking to the plate, it was a wrestling match to even hold up the contorting little beast with chopsticks. As inhuman as that may sound, I wanted to clarify that the creature was dead before hitting the plate. Just very, very, very fresh!

Immergersi nella tradizione culinaria di un’altra cultura e’ uno dei modi piu soddisfacenti di conoscere un angolo sconosciuto del mondo attraverso i sensi. E’ stato lo stesso quando abbiamo visitato la Corea del Sud. Fra le molte esperienze incredibili, una delle piu’ memorabili e’ stata quella di mangiare un polipo in miniatura che si muoveva. Con i tentacoli attaccati al piatto, cercare di afferrare con le bacchette la bestiola che si contorceva fu una lotta continua. Cio’ potrebbe sembrare inumano, quindi volevo mettere in chiaro che la creatura era morta prima di essere servita. Era solo molto, molto, ma molto fresca!

널리 불려지는 한국 동요인 “산토끼”입니다. 일제 강점기(1928년)에 이일래 선생이 산토끼를 보고 한 살짜리 딸에게 즉석으로 불러줬다고 합니다 [출처].	This is a widely known Korean children’s song called Santokki (literally means hill rabbit). It was written by Mr. Lee, Il-lae during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1928) who sang the song for his 1 year old daughter immediately after having spotted a jack rabbit.
